Minutes of Quick Calorimetry Meeting  13-12-96.


Present:  KWB, BWK, PSF, ALL, MS.


KWB   Beam line work frustated by target failure.
      Next Monday to IC for Endcap simulation meeting.
      At RAL till 20/12 then away 2 weeks.


PSF   Ordered parts for improvement of Sheffield rig; gas pipes, fittings
      and pump diaphragm. Found instructions for Meeko moisture meter
      which is thought to be broken. ZOx oxygen meter is at Sheffield.
      Management course 6-10 Jan. then back to Sheffield.


ALL   Reported on Test beam target problems. Target will not lower, Paul
      Alexander came down with circuit diagrams and we established that
      the last contactor was energising and putting volts on the cable
      which disappears in to the magnet hall to drive the motor.
      There is only a motor isolator (thought to be a switch) and a plug
      connecting the motor inside the ring. On checking between neutral
      and the 3 phases connecting to the motor these were found to be
      open circuit. So it may be a simple fault but we need an access to
      check inside the ring, they will call us in event of an ISIS failure
      requiring access or in silent hours will send down one of the crew.
      As a long shot MS and ALL got the ISIS crew to increase the bump
      current as high as possible to try and steer onto the target, they
      got to 200A where they became unhappy about beam loss and we still
      did not see any beam down our line.
      Checked on price and delivery of drive motor with Parvalux in case
      it is a motor failure. It costs #326 and will be 8 weeks delivery.
      We cannot order one until we have full information from a plate on
      the motor. Neil Cunliffe will be available on 24/12 for our first
      official access when the beam goes off.
      Working on design for scintillator beam hodoscope, waiting for
      quote for opto coupler.


BWK   This week working on annual report, final version ready.
      Looking at 1997/8 computing predictions for CMS.
      ISIS beam test data: good separation of protons and deuterons in
      TOF and Xtal pulse height, beam momentum spread 2.5%.
      Look at dE/dx for 770 MeV/c deuterons, maximum at edge of crystal
      i.e. through 20mm of PWO, so with momentum spread of beam some will
      be stopping.
      Preparing talk for meeting at IC on Monday, endcap simulations.
      Next week at RAL.


MS    Working with ALL on target problems. Still trying to get PC to
      talk to 'scope.
