Minutes of Quick Calorimetry Meeting   20-12-96


Present:   KWB, RMB, DJAC, PSF, BWK, ALL.


KWB   Working on CMS status report. IC meeting on Monday.
      Looking at Endcap geometry. Away next 2 weeks  


BWK   IC meeting on Monday. Building Encaps into simulation program
      although geometry not yet known.


DJAC  IC meeting Monday. Discussions with Len Denton who is drawing
      up Endcap variants.
      Follow up on IC meeting 24-1-97, with engineers present, Geoff
      Barber and David Britton will come from IC.
      Long term APD irradiation project signed up.
      Trouble with APD short term irradiation test rig, noise from
      switching power supply to Peltier cooler, has been solved and
      the box is now being reassembled in an orderly fashion for tests
      in the next ISIS cycle. Irradiations will be incremental
      2x10*11n/cm2 followed by test and recovery.
      Worked on Annual report and travel budget for next year.


ALL   The ISIS test beam target still fails to operate, tried daily
      in case of intermittent fault.
      There will be a short access to the ring to look for a possible
      simple fault, we will go in with Neil Cunliffe.
      ISIS will pay the #20k required to upgrade the target control
      system, this will proceed in the new year.
      DJAC made the point that the target system itself needed upgrading,
      ALL to talk to Ian Gardner about this.
      Working on design of scintillator beam hodoscope and modifying
      scint. counter for new veto.
      Talked to RS about progress on APD irradiation test box.


PSF   Looked at cost of moisture meters, #2-4k which is too much, so
      looked into making own of the chilled mirror type.
      3 ways considered for cooling mirror, LN2 thermal coupling,
      pumped LN2 or freezing mixture.
      ALL to work with PSF on cooling system.
      Another possibility is to loan moisture meter for 2 weeks at a
      cost of #100-200 to try and solve the problems.
      Showed Xray plot of PbWO4 ground crystal (PWO688), good fit to
      standard plot and worth pursuing with other known samples.
      Merck are checking on chemical quality.
      Contact with Townsend on exchange of glass samples for PM tube
      - pursue.


RMB   If Opal is finished around 2000, VPT's and 96 channel ADC's become
      available.
      Last week at CERN negotiating our position for Endcaps. Russians
      happy to collaborate with us, perhaps take on one endcap each.
      Russians to make/supply VPT's. Also keen to supply amplifiers,
      current generation not rad. hard but next ones may be.

      DJAC supplied sample amp (int. circuit) given by Russians to RS
      for evaluation and has asked for samples of VPTets made at
      St Petersburg.
