Minutes of Quick Calorimetry Meeting  8-11-96.


Present:  RMB, KWB, PSF, ALL, MS.


MS    Getting system up and running for ISIS run starting on 18-11.
      Working on APD temperature sensing readout but held up because
      RAL stores are not now keeping electronics components, they have
      to be ordered from RS.


KWB   Working with RMB on bid for money for Russians for PbWO4 work (Royal
      Society Awards).
      Next week work with MS on preparation for ISIS run. Opal status report.


PSF   Last week at Sheffield, temperature during casting of glass is now
      logged. Cloudiness of glass is still a problem, suspect possible
      moisture in box above furnace as quality improves with furnace
      running time. 3 days of running is probably no good for optimising
      the system so will consider running for longer periods from now on.
      Russian HfF4 on the way via Germany.
      Working on report for last years progress on FH glass manufacture
      for annual report emphasising extensive work on problems which will
      give a better position for making good glass.
      Seeing differences in JM and Russian HfF4 using X-Ray diffraction
      on powders. 


ALL   Mechanical work on beam line, traversing table will be re-assembled
      early next week. Made prototype element of beam hodoscope to check
      viability before ordering Ham. 16 ch. multianode PMT.
      Scintillation finger counter 40x12x5mm3 was connected by 10x 1mm
      diameter plastic fibre optics 150mm long to an XP2020 PMT. First
      look with 90Sr source showed signal/noise 2/1, after the meeting
      looked with Cosmic ray muons and showed a clear separation from
      pedestal.
      Ordered 2x R5900U-L16 Hamamatsu 16 Channel Multianode PMT's.
      The active base costs #489+vat and it was decided not to buy these
      but make our own. 
       

RMB   This week Senior Staff Mtg. Mon., CERN ECAL meetings Tues/Wed.
      ECAL meetings included Light yield and Regional centres.
      P. Lebeau outlined plans for large scale production of PWO crystals at
      Bogorodisk for CMS, Zeus and an Expt. at CEBAF.
      More R&D required for PWO crystals especially low dose rad. problem.
      At the regional centre meeting the ACCOSS machine was discussed with 
      the conclusion that the mechanics was to lavish and cost to high.
      Dave C showed our test beam set up on ISIS, P Lecoq would like tests
      on 6 packs which would mean beam testing.
      Finge of Prague was interested in our test set up and would like to 
      make something similar, ALL to furnish information for him.
      C.Dieter gave results from PSI with PMT and APD's. Uniforming done at
      CERN with PMT and source does not apply to APD's.
      Endcaps - JC is keen, discuss at IC meeting.
      Showed CMS new organisation structure.
