Minutes of Quick Calorimetry Meeting 22-11-96. Present: KWB, RMB, DJAC, BWK, ALL, MS. DJAC Reported on visit to Russia. Visits to Protvino, Bogorodisk, Dubna, and Institute of Nuclear Research. Protvino appear to be scaling down their aspirations and will not take on Ends caps but would like to become a "regional control centre" doing quality control of crystals produced at Bogorodisk. Protvino has a good electronics production infrastructure led by Alexander Sytin with around 350 staff, although this is expected to reduce by around 150. Bogorodisk showed 100 machines which will be dedicated to CMS crystal production. Latest production has seed reorientated on a new axis and now can be cut succesfully by the machine, 5 crystals were cut well. Crystal growth rate is 4-5mm/hour giving an annual production rate of 10,000, this is not enough for the time scale so will need Chinese to complement production. At Dubna met the preshower group, Protvino group came for an hour. At Institute of Nuclear Research met Nikolai Golubev who uses a Microtron at Dubna and does useful luminescence and spectrophotometry work, communicates with Finger of Prague who presents this work at CERN. Golubev might take up VPT work. An an IC to mount on photodetectors exists for readout. Full presentation with overheads next week. We now need a total of 110,000 crystals. 30-40% greater volume now in endcaps than in technical proposal. At RAL, PC's and workstations should have 19in screens, Gareth ordering. We should get a decent colour printer for the group. Workstation at CERN - Sun has a special offer, the functionality is attractive rather than the computing power, RMB suggests a MAC might be cheaper, check on price Jim Virdee paid for his. ALL ISIS start up not very good, no beam on first day but good on Tuesday morning, managed to set up and scan counters and brass box into beam. Ordered Active base and 2 sockets for Ham. multianode PMT. Dow Corning say that optical couplant Q2-3067 used at CERN has been obsolete for some years, have asked for alternative and asked Chris Seez if he can arrange for some CERN couplant to come back with BWK or DJAC. Mechanical work for traversing table mods is est. at #1000 by RAL workshop, have asked for quote from outside firm. Looking at EDM machining for producing fibre optic coupler to multi anode PMT. Next week test beam. BWK Working on 96 CMS report for PPE. Replied to latest computing questionnaire. Moved ECAL simulation program from VAX to CSF. Next week CERN, Opal shifts. RMB Opal status report completed, now on Web. Loooked at Fluoride glass report for PSF. Working on budget estimates. Magnet TDR due next February, complete status report required with this which means a report on ECAL and defence of PWO. Decision not made yet but probably better in Feb. than later. Next week at CERN for CMS management board meeting, 1 day. MS Working on test beam, data aquisition program nearly in final state. No remote connection to LeCroy 'scope yet, data on floppy for this run. Next week test beam. KWB Worked on status report for Opal with RMB. Rebuilding logic on test beam, will now have 'scope logic and parallel logic for computer. Scope will select protons/deuterons. Data from ISIS early next week. Laurie Lintern 26-11-96.
