Minutes of Quick Calorimetry Meeting 18-10-96. Present: RMB, DJAC, BWK, ALL. BWK Started construction of Web page for CMS UK. So far only outlined for ECAL, will tell other collaborators. ECAL page will have minutes of group meetings, it was decided that these should be password protected. Simulating high energy response of calorimeter. Tried combining different cluster shapes simulations with tracker service material but no success in optimising this. Preparing these simulations for presentation at ECAL simulation meeting in November. RMB This week correcting documents for PPC presentation. Derek Imrie has elaborated on radiation damage work. Final version will be distributed. Communicated with Lesley Wellbourne at Daresbury with corrections to "Heart of CMS" article in CLRC Bulletin about APV 6 chip. Recommended "New Electronics" as a useful trade journal. Fauer looked at CMS constitution document and wanted insertion of an annex for possible expulsion of collaborators. Resources review board coming up, discussed with Michel on continuing CERN finance. Next week CERN for RRB. PSF Sheffield last week making glass. Also used thermogramametric analyser to look at mass change with heating of HfF4 samples. With JM HfF4 see moisture going off up to around 200degC then mass loss from water in crystals or hydroxides as temperature is raised further. The Russian HfF4 did not exhibit these losses. Tried X Ray analysis of ground HfF4 crystals, peak structure for JM and Russian sample is different, but looks similar after bakeout of JM sample. Bruce Forsyth produced X Ray data for HfF4 which fitted well with PSF data. Showed glass produced last week. With JM HfF4 glass showed reddish traces. Russian HfF4 glass looks good. Corrected JM HfF4 weight in mix to account for loss of volatiles as measured in tests, this gave perfect glass. Next week A/L, working on PhD. ALL Prepared order for stepper motor mods. to traversing table, cost is #5200 of which #2000 can come from test beam budget. RMB feels that the other #3200 should come from GEK as a request for this and other test beam upgrades. Prepared a note to GEK on required upgrades to test beam; traversing tables, options for beam profile hodoscope, and replacement PC with costings. DJAC to commmunicate these requests to GEK. Commissioned recirculator/cooler, works very well good temperature control and quiet running. Pressure 1.4bar, asked for 1bar, but no leaks. Test load traversing table to 50kg (max load on spec is 50lb). Deflections measured on 2 guide bars and lead screw thread, max deflection was 0.25mm and all returned on unloading. Speed in all drive directions was normal on full loading. More Hamamatsu quotes for multi anode PMT's, a new 16 channel linear device looks interesting and costs #1114 ex vat. Will check delivery. DJAC Gavin Davies came on Tuesday, showed test beam facilities and discussed what IC may do in collaboration with us. Distributed note on ACCOS machine for UK. Brunel and IC in a good position to push this effort. ACCOS machine would probably go to IC initially. Talked to Mike Edwards about leaving APD's 6 metres from the collector of the ISIS neutron irradiation facility for rates similar to LHC, this should be OK. Discussions with JC on electronics meeting at RAL in November. We will take over Minos equipment in Lab 7 when they have finished, Dave agreed this with Richard Cotton who also reports loss from Lab 7 of HP digital scope and printer. ALL aware of this and investigating. Laurie Lintern 21-10-96.
