Minutes of Quick Calorimetry Meeting 28-4-97. Present: KWB, RMB, DJAC, PSF, PWJ, BWK, ALL, MS. DJAC Last week at CERN, preferred option of super crystals presented to ECal group. UK and RDMS groups are happy with this design. Russians have copies of the design and are keen to get involved. JC says gaps within are down to 0.5mm and cracks are around 2mm. At the simulation meeting there was a discussion on our geometry, ideas generated by JC,LD and BS should go through BWK to the end cap group. JLF et al very pleased with the design. DJAC to to submit to the Technical board at next meeting. It would be a good idea to put design documentation onto Web. Electronics meeting: P Denis enthusiatic to irradiate electronics to LHC 10 year level. Pre amp for barrel should be alright for VPT's when optimised for capacitance of VPT. 20 prototypes of preamp from Lyon would cost 100 kFFranc. to evaluate and modify/optomise for VPT's. RS will look at using preamp with VPT. ADC's tested to 3Mrad so far. Pre shower meeting: Pre shower will be cooled to 0degC/-5degC and will incorporate a buffer plate so end cap will be pushed back. This week regional centre meeting, probably at Brunel. ECal and tracker - get agreement on funding. ALL Still working on APD irradiation tests, after variations seen in gain we decided to run the control APD (non irradiated) on volts all week only dropping the volts to do measurements. The APD stabilised and the variations in gain got down to the 0.1% level. The plan this week is to run the remaining good irradiated APD in the same way hoping for stable gain measurements before it goes for it's next irradiation when ISIS restarts. Martin Torbet and Derrick Hill managed to get the long term APD test installed in the ISIS ring and reading out in the test beam area. Temperature control and dark current on volts looked OK. Door locks on Lab 7: the man came today to look at situation and will give an estimate for push button combination locks. Will ask GEK for the department to pay for them. I think he will only agree to 2 at the most (#500 ea), main door and workshop. Some work on beam hodoscope but still a lot to do. KWB Last week in CERN for Opal and CMS meetings. This week get back to ISIS and noise problems, investigate noise at 30 MHz which it seems may come from ISIS rf. Work on PPESP document, write up test beam results BWK Last week Opal work and some FJW work for PPESP. Did a lot of geometrical calculations and coding geometry into GEANT, job should be running tomorrow. Look at effect of cracks/gaps at corner where 4 super crystals meet. Will try and present something on geometry for ECal week. PSF Measuring Sheffield samples for transmission so that glasses can be matched for re melting. Latest batch of Russian HfF4 should make good glass, 1kg in the post from DESY. Will test the 2 blocks in ISIS test beam, also Karen's samples to be tested some time. RMB Rad hard front window for VPT's - information from Electron tubes not forthcoming - perhaps Sheffield could work on this. PSF to look at rad tolerant, non scintillating glasses with good transmission down to 380-400nm. PPESP document should be in by 5/5 (Bank Hol). DJAC says it can be in by 7/5. This week respond to letter from Ian Corbet on management of money for Atlas and CMS. MS Programing on test beam, can now auto scan crystal. Tidying up other programs for single measurements. This week work on noise in test beam and fitting small PMT for brass box with ALL. Look at output from Martin Torbet's box to PC. PWJ Helped Glen with reply for regional computing enquiry. Laurie Lintern 30-4-97.
