Minutes of Quick Calorimetry Meeting 4-7-97. Present: RMB, DJAC, PSF, BWK, ALL, MS. MS Tested Paul's latest glass blocks. Set up for scanning Russian cylindrical PWO crystals this afternoon. Will be scanning PWO crystals from CERN investigating discrepancy in light yield uniformity between CERN/PSI data. All data has been transferred to VAX from Karens samples. Pick up from traversing table motor drive system has been cured by replacing a brass spacer with SRBF. EG&G APD will be put back in brass box. Will do VPT/APD light yield comparison using recent CERN crystal (poor) or PWO 762. RMB This week PPESP confirmed figure will be #6.9 million, so now planning will be on a firm base. Need to provide more information on costing, will work with referees. Working to understand core contribution for ECAL with DJAC. De scoping needed for ECAL. New CMS bulletin is out, can be found on WEB. BWK This week do simulation scan of endcap with preshower in correct place. Resolution gets marginally worse. Preshower now has 4cm moderator before Lead/ 1cm thermal buffer + 6cm moderator. Extra space required may push endcap back, technical board will be asked if endcap position can be maintained by encroaching into tracker space. Next week will be implementing geometry from yesterdays meeting working with Len Denton. Will write up framework of headings. Specify Z for crystals and supercrystals. Make changes to test beam analysis program. PSF Last week at Daresbury open days, went well. Retrieve data from VAX on latest glass blocks, will write progress report for Russians, emphasise need for more HfF4. Cylindrical Russian doped samples are here ready for MS to scan. For irradiation of samples use a Cs137 source 8 mCi which has been located. Needs good lead shielding castle and shutter arrangement. Risk assessment required for this operation, it will be located in R 5.2 (test beam area). ALL APD irradiation readings now at a low level, 3 times/week. Graduate student from Brunel, Mark Osbourne has been registered in the system and is attending relevent safety courses. He is sharing Paul's office. Not yet involved in APD work as Derek Imrie has asked him to write up his APD modelling work, Steve Watts will be his new supervisor. Test beam - brass box now isolated from traversing table with SRBF spacer and nylon screws. Beam hodoscope proceeding again, all scintillators strips polished, waiting for optical fibre (arrived after the meeting). Have asked tentatively to run the High field test rig on week of 21/7 or 28/7. Bob Coombs to see Elwyn Baynham about this. High field tests - In the meeting it was decided not to move to quickly on this as we have to work out a programme and ensure the facility is used to best effect. Repeat Ham. VPT tests, set up Russian VPT's, check progress on Electron tubes VPT's. Russian field tests should be repeated at 1.4T, this is an ideal job for the for the warm magnet in R 5.2 so ALL to push this as top priority. Needs some plumbing before pumping Sulphuric acid through the system to clean up pipes, this operation needs a risk assessment. Digital locks to be fitted to PPD labs on Fri 11/7 and Mon 14/7. ALL on A/L 9-11/7. DJAC This week, going over schedule for Endcap with John Connolly. Universities have been given copies for there input. Will be put on WEB. Must start Endcap reference book with main parameters, drawings etc, and put on WEB. Encourage Bristol to get involved with Russian VPT magnetic field work. They have the Opal 700gauss magnet and there is a need for low field work. (may have a water cooling problem). Next week CERN/AL. Following week return to RAL with Russian VPT's and PWO crystals from CERN. Laurie Lintern 8-7-97.
