Minutes of the meeting help on 7th November 1997 Present: RMB, BWK, KWB, MS, ALL. (written report from PSF) ALL - Work on hodoscope a bit slow (80% of gluing done) Pipe-work, to supply water to magnet, now flushed with acid, new manifold complete and just needs connecting to pipe-work, should not need flushing as purged with nitrogen during brazing. Next week, hodoscope. KWB - Mainly OPAL work. Next week, management course. BWK - Simulation, effect of cracks on low energy tail, also effects of going from 25.0 to 25.9mm. Helped get simulation program running on CSF. Glenn and Helen have now started work using simulation program. Extracted endcap material from TDR and placed on CMSUK web pages. Cross checked xtal positions with Len, now agree. Next week, continue with simulation work, check with Chris that info for TDR is covered. MS - Test beam PC back up and running. LabVIEW installed on test beam PC. Next week, Noise measurements on APD and VPT. Check what equipment required for VPT testing in magnet. RMB - CERN last week, heavily involved in the preparation of the TDR. Bob then detailed some of the problems that were causing concern in the PDR (first attempt of TDR), he is also involved in editing chapters of the document, he also expressed his hope that we might be able to get the results of a first test of the VPTs in the new magnet. There has been a test at CERN of PWO xtals with Russian VPTs in the beam-line, resolution 0.66% and average noise of 150 MeV were obtained. Next week, more editing and more work to resolve the construction schedule and funding problems. PSF - notes attached Martin Sproston 7th November 1997. PSF notes: It seems I am the Glove Tsar for PPD This means I have to attend a course on gloves today so here is a written report Transmission Measurement I have cut 6.3 mm slices from 7 the big block off cuts to see if the variation in transmission between large samples and small samples is caused by an optical effect or is real. These samples have been measured and I am still analysing the results. I am also trying to associate specific absorptions with specific concentrations of Fe 3+ and Fe2+. Density Measurement Eugine asked for information on the density and radiation length of the glass. I have calculated the density to be 5.82 and the radiation length to be 1.69cm I needed to make the density measurements so measured the samples I have been carrying out transmission tests on These samples are all made to the same mixture. Measurements made at 20 C Sample Density Copper control 8.98 P337 5.77 P343 5.74 P345 5.75 P346B 5.75 P349 5.79 P355B 5.79 P357 5.77 Copper control 8.98 The CRC handbook gives the density of copper as 8.96 at 20C Initially I found a density of 8.92 for copper and so normalised to this getting a mean glass density of 5.73 and radiation length of 1.72, the figures I gave to Eugine. I now believe the true values are nearer to those measured giving the glass a density of 5.77 and a corresponding radiation length of 1.71. I have not yet estimated the errors properly but believe the error to be less than 0.01 but there may be a systematic of 0.02 New HfF4 I have been in communication with Mary Elizabeth at CERN over the delivery of 1.5 kg of HfF4 Valentin has brought to CERN. This has now very kindly been delivered safely to me by Norman. I have thanked Mary Elizabeth and Valentin Next week Plan to complete analysis of transmission data on latest samples and complete work on the yield of Russian PWO samples Visit to Sheffield The Sheffield rig has been out of commission this week. ( They are working on the roof and don't like fluoride fumes coming from the fume cabinets), and are in use next week. I have booked to go up for the week 17 to 21 November. This will enable me to test the new Russian HfF4. Russian Visit At present, Eugine and Lara are expected to arrive on Thursday Nov. 27th and stay for 3 weeks They have expressed a preference to have 2 single rooms in Oxford at 25 pounds each. I think that is only possible if they share but I will need the exact dates so I can book somewhere. I can give usually give lifts in from Oxford but there will be a period when I am away. There is a works bus and there are some car pools so transport should be OK. I may also be asking for help from a PPD Oxford East resident ( Ken Bell, Dave Cockerill, Norman McCubbin, Ben Allanach, John Coughlan ...) Work at Daresbury From the 10 to 15 December I will be working with Volodya and John at Daresbury so would ask that someone else takes over administrative responsibility for our visitors during that period.
