Minutes of Quick Calorimetry meeting  5-9-97.


Present:  RMB, DJAC, PSF, DI, BWK, ALL, RT.


BWK   Moving Endcap simulations to CSF, not easy but now working.
      Glen and Helen have copies.
      Helen to look at effect of varying Crystal length.
      Bruce and Glen will continue to work on gaps and cracks.
      DJAC - Hermeticity in CMS is an issue coming up.
      Working on plots for Madison for DJAC.
      Next week, simulations for Madison and think about longer
      term for TDR.


DI    Helen Moyes from Hamamatsu has promised a 20mm prototype VPT
      by the end of the month, to make a 22mm vpt is no problem.
      Electron tubes VPT progress - secondary emmission of dynode is
      not up to scratch but photocathode is OK. Still promised by the 
      end of the month but not worth pushing in case we end up with
      inferior VPT.
      Meeting with Eddy Bateman this morning, he has a test facility
      for VPT's in his lab, produced plot of response of Russian VPT's.
      Recieved EMail from Dimitri on latest Russian VPT.
      Modelling of VPT's held up due to lack of computer.


PSF   Glass - made sample at Sheffield to check Russian HfF4, no Cerium.
      Transmission looked fair, going below 300nm.
      2 kg of Russian HfF4 is due next week.
      DJAC suggests concentrating on materials analysis before making blocks.
      PWO Molybdenum doped Russian samples being measured on ISIS by MS
      using PMT and APD.
      Think about setting up irradiation tests of these samples.


RMB   Last week meeting with PPARC on document for OST/PPARC for approval
      of CMS. Write appendices for document with JV.
      This week, CERN, attended steering commitee meeting of CMS.
      Studying tracker TDR.
      Read final Russian report for INTAS work.
      To write article for CMS bulletin.
      Next week meet with John Garvey, start to prepare PPARC document.


ALL   Wrote risk assessment for acid cleaning of magnet cooling pipes
      in R 5.2. This has now been approved by Dave Evans, just need
      Caustic soda for neutralising acid.
      Thinking about new "armature" to accomodate and rotate all VPT's.
      
RT    Converting translation of Russian ISTC proposal to normal English
      and editing. Sent edited report back to Dimitri yesterday.


DJAC  Informed engineers of ECAL radius change.
      Crystal size increases and barrel goes to 5x5 from 6x6 crystals.
      Endcap stays at 6x6, crystal size 25.9 x 25.9 mm2.
      Engineers will draw up Endcap for channel count for J LFaure.
      RS has Lyon pre amp and has made a test box but 3 leads in flexi
      broken, DJAC to exchange.
      Will get 9 pre amps from Lyon for 3x3 prototype, RS to make PC to
      interface these.
      Details of new travel allocation sent out to Universities.
      Next week, meeting with H.Hofer on Monday to discuss ECAL payment
      breakdown to be ready for TDR end October.
      Preparation for Madison.
