              Minutes of Quick Calorimetry Meeting  5-6-98


Present: HA, KWB, RMB, PSF, DCI, BWK, ALL.


KWB   Working on INTAS document all this week, will be finished
      today. Next week CERN Thursday, Bert Westwood visit Wedsnesday.
      

PSF   This week analysing big block data to write chapter of Thesis.
      Difference in yields is quite marked, use offcut data to measure 
      yield as as absorption predominates in big block measurements.
      Look at time constant/yield relationships, it is clear that
      absorption is the limitation rather than quenching.
      PMT, VPT and APD measuements of glass when normalised show
      good correlation.
      Next week, finish this chapter.


ALL   Beam hodoscope set up with discriminators ready to plug
      into pattern units. Complete safety committee requirements
      in test beam.
      Working on design of magnet multi VPT test facility. The
      maximum number of VPT's that can be easily accomodated is 32.
      Looking at driving with plastic chain or toothed timing belt.
      Stepper motor/encoder, RS232 and control units estimated
      cost is #2500. Mechanical work est, at #1500.
      RMB suggests contacting FJ at CERN for any electronics as
      RAL CERN loan pool is well stocked.
      Next week Beam hodoscope and VPT multi test facility.


DCI   VPT's, a large area photocathode (20mm dia) Hamamatsu  with
      2000 LPI mesh is available.
      Produced combined LED/PIN datasheet and Quote (#32.85 ea).
      ET 10001 is continuing long term test in 4.2T rig, 750 hours
      now in and out of magnet, looks fairly consistent except
      for last measurement which was a bit rushed. PSF questions
      temperature stability, which was considered to be a relevent
      consideration RMB notes that temperature stability dependent on
      wavelength and not very stable in the green, a green LED is
      being used. Looked at cathode leakage current in and out of 
      field and found fluctuations.
      Discussed with Electron tubes possibilty of gettering to
      remove residual gas.
      ET ready to proceed with 25.4mm diameter VPT's, 23mm long
      and overall length with pins 30mm. They just need mesh
      size defining.


BWK   Fitting scans on glass blocks for PSF and fitting field
      scans of VPT's for MS.
      Writing up End cap monte carlo. Next week scan analysis
      and finish writing up End cap document.


HA    Working with MS on VPT magnet scans.


RMB   PRH want's to test VPT in 1.8T magnet on Wednesday.
      Doing APR's. Looking at costing again for next management
      meeting. Fix budget figures.
      ECal week - DaveC presented programme of work for End caps.
      The programme was accepted and presented to Institution
      board on Friday. CERN beam tests - noise reasonable, Res.
      for central crystal 1%. Irradiating central crystal for
      radiation damage test.
      Next week, more APR's, Bert Westwood visit Wedsnesday.
      Scientific initiatives document to write for Ken Peach.
