Quickcal 26 Mar 1999

Minutes of Quick Calorimetry Meeting 26-3-99.

Present: KWB, RMB, PSF, DCI, BWK, ALL.

ALL Ordering equipment for IC crystal lab.
Discussions with Brian on VPT attachment to crystals.
Working on hardware for Beam line magnets auto control,
Andrew has Labview software ready to try Adam units.
      Coordination of PPD lab refurbishments.

RMB Reported on Gluing task force and glue meetings in CMS week.
There were problems with Histamount (a solvent based glue)
when used to glue APD's principally due to a concave dome
formed by the passivation resin used by Ham on the APD. This
filled with the glue on attachment and resulted in bubbles
formed from the solvent evaporation. The fix was to fill the
dome with Histamount before gluing forming a small convexitty.
Last week CMS week at CERN. Barrel ECAL hope to have a module
(800 APD's) by end 99, some doubt about APD deliveries on this
time scale.Chinese PWO emits in the green, Russian PWO in the
blue so some problem for laser calibration system.
      CMS UK Management meeting Monday.
Refereeing LHC B project for PPESP.
From CMS week: EE Rmax = 1766mm, hermeticity good for photons.
Plug meeting: Dave gave good presentaion on quartz fibres.
Russians proposed nose of scintillating fibres end on with
facility to change after rad. damage.
Minnesota will have a Californium neutron source for APD irrads.
(from Los Alomos, 1 off charge of $20k, includes removal).

DCI A lot of VPT testing. 19 brought to RAL:
      9 Hamamatsu 3 Centre 5 Edge + Spare.
      10 Electron Tubes 3 Centre 5 Edge.
Ham. tubes look nice, average gain 7.5 (800/600V).
Photocathode response good and very stable
ET not so good, best to go for 1500 LPI, UV window.
5 RIE measured (not in field) around 10% down on Ham.
Photocathode response good, gain similar, leakage current high
(2-3nA) fluctuating, could be adjacent pins. Now test at 4.7T.
DJAC brings 6 more RIE on Tuesday.

BWK Preparation for PPESP.
Simulation, running with single pions and single photons now try
      with jets in cable region.
      Fermilab trip soon.

PSF Concentrating on getting high quality data on glue.
Spectrophotometer baseline calibration error reduced from 1.5%
      to around 0.3%.
Testing Nusyl and Dow RTV's, thin/medium/thick samples.
Thickness 140/890/1500 microns, showed transmission plots.
In thick sample Dow is better at long wavelength and Nusyl better
      at short wavelength.
Next week working on absorption coefficient and effect of curing.

KWB Working on longitudinal scans from ISIS test beam with the full
size crystals. PWO 2182 is a good crystal with FNUF/RNUF very
uniform. PWO 2184 flat in front region but strange shape at
      PMT end.
Next week, back on Opal work.
