Minutes Of Quick CMS Meeting 16-06-00 Present: BWK, PSF, IRT, RMB, JHW AMT(Alex Turner, new boy), DCI , DJAC. BWK Report on Brunel Meeting the Previous week Brunel Rig prototype is ready to wire up. Stepper motor ordered - expected end July Triggered DAQ card has arrived at Brunel Standard Data format for VPT test results to be established Helen Heath’s Flow chart for CRISTAL will be presented to Mr LeGoff on Weds - with modifications to include data for “batch” materials eg Face Plate Glass Perhaps we could see how the Barrel people are doing their CRISTAL database? Other VPT Hardware Any dimension checker should be ready by 31st Aug - JHW to continue work LED driver to come from OPAL - do we have the right cables? Laurie Lintern/Tony Lodge/Ted Simmonds to investigate sockets for the three wires on the VPT Simulation Work Calibration - Calibration using Z to e+e- events if tracker is not down to 2.65? 100-1000 events/year/crystal = 3-4 calibration events/year Supercrystal calibration could be done using energy sharing PT cut of 20 GeV Resolution issues- Diagrams comparing resolution using just 5x5 blocks, and 5x5 and 3x5 blocks showed the increase in resolution around the endcap circumference. Bob talked about problems of running without an endcap PSF Paul brought 12 pre-amps back from Bristol but they have to be returned for calibration (cockup) Helium Rig has now plateau’d but is showing marked temperature dependence. This was thought to be the VPT, not the LED as LEDs usually give off less light with higher temp. It is not possible to see whether this occurs before helium ingress because of noise. Meeting with Justin Greenhalgh - We declined to do heat flow calcs for the supercrystal cos we’ve got too much on - maybe later Glue drying vs humidity tests will go ahead - Alex Turner, our sandwich year student to run these. The Gluing rig should be ready by September. - thinking caps on! Noise issues. Richard Stephenson should approve any work we do with EMC technicians on noise IRT CMS week Data flow from Silicon Tracker was presented There are problems with FEDs providing too much data for memory buffer of DAQ to cope with Ian then ceased talking in english so the only other thing I got was that he was going to feed simulated data into ORCA and also do some work using the test beam at X5 RMB Bob talked about the possibility of some of us going on VME courses which was considered a Good Idea. We were shown the latest CMS bulletin, available from the “bulletins” link at http://cmsdoc.cern.ch/cms.html Finance board This has two problems at present - 1) The funding from ETH was scheduled to finish in 2008 but 2006 looks more likely, which means larger yearly payments 2)Contracts for the crystals were in US$ not SF - unfavourable changes in exchange rates mean that most of our 10m SF contingency money has gone. The full order for the crystals must be placed by 1 July. Good news Felicitas Pauss now holds the purse strings. She is generally considered a good egg so hopefully will be able to sort these problems out. We will get 200 more crystals from Russia this year, the rest will come from China 500 in 2001 The EDR will be in November 2000 There are new regs for Radiation Workers at CERN (details on RAL intranet) Subsistence rates for overseas workers are being tightened changed. JHW More tidying of Lab 7. Rescued some old equipment that was being thrown out of R24 stores inc scanner with ADF, frequency generator etc. Some design of VPT measuring eqpt Thoughts on Limit switch for VPT test rig Probably going on 4 day electronics course next month Updating Web site AMT Welcome to Alex, our new sandwich student - he is currently undergoing induction (painful), and learning LabView. We have him lined up for experimentation. DCI Has been revising VPT specification. The price for the preproduction tubes will be US$49 ea. Face plate radiation hardness testing - gamma studies will be at Brunel, neutrons at RAL. RIE will need the results ASAP in case of any problems/issues. DJAC Didn’t have anything to say that hadn’t already been said. Joolz 19-06-00
