Pierre Sikivie produced a splendid introduction to the axion for the XVth Moriond Workshop in January 1995 (Dark Matter in Cosmology, Clocks and Tests of Fundamental Laws, Editions Frontières, 1996, 149-158): `The pooltable analogy to axion physics'.

Despite their very low mass, axions would have been produced at rest, and so are cold dark matter.
