UCL HEP computing: current

• All computers are desktop machines (workstations, PCs, or X-terms)

  • Main system is Digital UNIX (4 Alphastations -- 1 with lots of memory & disk)
  • Vestigial VMS (2 Alphastations + 1 VAXstation)
  • Most (~18) desktops are PCs (+ 6 X-terminals): dual-bootable (Linux + WNT)

• Single heavy-duty printers:

  • Postscript laser printer (+ obsolete machine for backup)
  • 1 heavy-duty colour printer (solid-ink -- also serves as laser backup)

• Laptops and remote access proving very useful

• Purchased software includes:

  • DEC Campus, AFS client, MS Office Pro, Vista Exceed, Visual C++, Framemaker, AutoCAD Lt, Mentor (CAD), Labview

• Free software includes:

  • TeX, ghostscript/view, xv, xfig, gnu c/c++, emacs
