Text Box: The Electric Dipole Moment (EDM) of the neutron is a quantity which would violate the fundamental symmetries of space and time. As such it is one of the most important measurements in Particle Physics today. It addresses questions such as the cosmological significance of how the Universe has evolved from the Big Bang to be matter dominated at present.
Text Box: Experiments to measure the EDM of the neutron by the Rutherford Appleton Lab and the University of Sussex group have been carried out at the Institut Laue Langevin since 1977. The latest result from our Room Temperature experiment on the ultra-cold neutron source at PF2 has set the tightest experimental limit ever on the magnitude of the neutron EDM.
A new experiment has been constructed, CryoEDM, that operates within superfluid helium at temperatures of 0.5 K to produce high densities of ultra cold neutrons and to measure the EDM. This experiment is now being reorganised to bring it more into line with revised STFC’s resources allocation in this area of science.
